Global Medical Academy

Hands-On International Medical Experience for Faculty and Students

This summer, we are inviting high school faculty to travel with their students to join the Global Medical Academy on 9-day medical trips to Belize and Panama. On each trip, faculty and students will get 30+ hours of hands-on experience in patient intake, triage, patient consultation (shadowing doctors), and supporting in the pharmacy while volunteering in rural clinics. The program also includes fun and engaging cultural and enrichment activities each day. We will meet the students at the airport and organize all food, lodging, transportation, and logistics during their stay.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 1 Free Faculty Advisor w/ 3+ students (faculty/advisor recommended but not required)
  • Students entering Junior or Senior Year of HS
  • CPR/1ST Aid Certificate (by May 30th, 2024)
  • Teacher letter of recommendation certifying medical assisting experience

For younger students that do not meet these requirements, we invite them to join the Global Impact Academy

Program Details

Program Fee

$3,590* including airfare per student

1 Faculty chaperone FREE (with 3+ students)

* includes all food, lodging, transport, staffing, travel insurance, advertised activities, and contribution to operate the mobile medical clinic

Day-to-Day Activities

Days 1 – 2:

Arrival and Orientation

 

Our staff will meet you and your fellow Academy program participants at the airport and provide transport to a hotel in the city for orientation and preparation. You will be introduced to our team and get to know everyone.

The following day, you will visit a local community and learn about rural healthcare and local economic needs.

Days 3 – 6:

Rural Community Mobile Medical Clinics

Students will work with healthcare professionals during mobile medical clinics, providing assistance to hundreds of patients. Clinics consist of intake, triage, consultations, dental stations, educational workshops, potentially a vision station, and a pharmacy station.

Days 7 – 9:

Cultural Activities, Sightseeing and Departure

Students enjoy cultural activities and explore local tourist sites before returning to the city for final evening reflections, celebrations and departure. Friends and family will be excited to hear the many amazing stories, friendships, and discoveries you made!

A Sustainable High-Impact Health Non-Profit

For 20 years, Global Health Squads has supported communities around the world to access essential medical and healthcare services. Through rural and urban clinics, as well as school health screenings and public health workshops, Global Health Squads and our partners have served over 1.6 million patients to date.

On a Global Health Academy program, you will be partnered with healthcare service projects that are long-lasting and high impact. Alongside our partner NGO Global Brigades, we ensure that all of your work, and the work of our team, makes a sustainable positive impact on the lives of the communities in which we work. We invite you to come see for yourself!

Squads are passionate groups of volunteers who mobilize abroad to create positive change. Each Squad type has a skill-based focus area that support the education, health and economic development objectives of community partners. Faculty choose their dates, duration (typically 1-2 weeks), and their site location from one of our six program countries.
